Locally, there are two tournaments that will open the High School wrestling season. Here are short previews.
Claysburg Pizza Tournament
The Field: Claysburg, Central, Mapletown, Parkersburg WV, Penn Cambria, Portage, Tussey Mountain, Tyrone.
This tournament has switched from an individual tournament to a dual-meet format. The standout team on paper is Parkersburg, which has four returning West Virginia state placewinners, led by upperweight Jared Haught, a defending state champion and Virginia Tech recruit. Claysburg's Josh Brown is the only PIAA state qualifier returning of the teams involved.
Conemaugh Township Tournament
The Field: Conemaugh Township, Bellwood, Johnstown, Ligonier Valley, Mount Union, Richland, Southern Huntingdon, Westmont, Williamson, West Greene.
Standout individuals here include Ligonier Valley's Justin and Josh Patrick, both returning top five state placewinners. Josh Patrick recently signed to wrestle at Rutgers. West Greene's Cody Jacobs is solid, and Williamson's Logan Everett was a fifth-place state medalist at 120 last March.
