Review and Preview - Jan. 26

We're a day late on the usual Monday weekly posting, but with nothing going on this past weekend due to the snowstorm that dropped 2-3 feet in some areas, all athletic events were called off.
So there's nothing to recap (I had given myself the weekend off anyway), but a lot to look forward to and that begins tonight at Bedford, as Westmont-Hilltop pays a visit in what will be a match for the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference championship.
Bedford is 7-0 and Westmont is 6-1 in the league. Obviously, a Bison win means an unbeaten LHAC record and the title on this side of the mountain. I don't have time to do a bout by bout preview, but you can check out Eric Knopsnyder's page (Wrestling PA) for more on each team's lineup.
Like Eric, I wouldn't call myself an expert either, but we do share similar views on the match. He has Bedford winning in the 40-25 range, while my first look at it showed Bedford 38, Westmont-Hilltop 26.
One thing I would point out is if you are coming to the match, plan on arriving early with the parking situation, something that tends to be an issue under normal conditions at Bedford. The high school lot appears pretty clear from the recent snow, but the streets around the school are narrower than usual and surely that will account for less parking available on the street. This probably bears true for the Thomas Subaru Tournament this weekend, so keep that in mind as well. Luckily for myself and maybe some others, I live close enough to be able to walk (And no, I don't have any extra parking spots to sell you, sorry).
I would expect Twitter to be very active tonight, and you can follow me at @r_spring21, or check out @Bedfordwrestle or @WestySports for possible updates.
Here's a look at the rest of the week:

Review and Preview - Jan. 18

This past week's highlight event was the Ultimate Duals at Brookville, which I covered for the Bedford Gazette. Chestnut Ridge won three of its five duals minus two starters, Jared McGill and Brandyn Beaver. The Lions beat Burrell, Greenville, and Saegertown.
McGill suffered a broken nose in practice last Tuesday. He was cleared to compete, but Greg Lazor kept his standout freshman on the sidelines. Given more important matters down the road, which includes this week's home dual with Berlin, as well as upcoming big events with the Thomas Subaru Tournament and the district duals, Lazor wants his best 14 on the mat.
Obviously, I would have liked to have seen a full-strength Chestnut Ridge squad there, as it's sort of a mini-preview of what the state duals next month may look like, assuming each of those teams from Saturday reach Hershey (Brookville, Reynolds, Chestnut Ridge, Burrell, and Greenville seem likely). That said, holding McGill out made complete sense, while the absense of Beaver didn't help in the losses to Brookville and Reynolds.
Reynolds won 10 bouts in a 47-18 victory, with the lopsided score coming on the Raiders' strength of their studs. Lazor also couldn't get any matchups in his favor based on what was missing in his lineup, as Reynolds basically was heavily favored in two of every three bouts. Do the Lions win with a 100% lineup? I'm not so sure, but I would have liked to have seen how things played out.
Brookville beat Ridge by seven points, then turned the nightcap into a rout by beating Reynolds, 36-20, essentially laying claim to the #1 ranking in the state (Chestnut Ridge was #1 by PA Power, while Off the Mat had Reynolds on top). The District 9 team got out of the box quickly, which may have forced Reynolds coach Casey Taylor to bump state champion Cole Matthews against placewinner Tate Ortz at 132. Ortz picked up a 10-2 major.
Assuming Brookville and Reynolds (as District 10-1) get to Hershey, they would be paired on the same side of the bracket, as was the case last year when eventual champion Boiling Springs beat both on the way to the title. The bracket is the same as last year, with the District 5 champion on the bottom with the play-in winner of District 3-2 vs. District 6-2 in the opening round, and probably D7-1 in the quarters.
There are certainly going to be other contenders, including that 3-2/6-2 winner (maybe Huntingdon, Mount Union, Boiling Springs, or Northern Lebanon), D11 frontrunner Saucon Valley, or D4 teams Montoursville or Wyalusing, so state duals should be an exciting time again.
That's a look far ahead, but here's what's on tap this week. Keep in mind that next week is the Thomas Subaru Tournament, with the makeup date between Bedford and Westmont-Hilltop three days before.

For the third straight year, Chestnut Ridge is making the trip to Brookville. Below is some more information on the event:

20th Annual Johnson Motors Ultimate Duals

Chestnut Ridge (#1 PA Power, #4 Off the Mat)
Reynolds (#1 Off the Mat, #2 PA Power, also #45 nationally by Intermat)
Brookville (#3 Off the Mat, #3 PA Power)

Saegertown (#10 PA Power, #20 Off the Mat)
Burrell (#18 PA Power, #24 Off the Mat)

Other Fast Facts
— In Dugan's latest Off the Mat rankings, there are 19 wrestlers expected in this dual meet tournament that are ranked in the top six at their weight classes, including three #1's with Chestnut Ridge's Aaron Burkett at 106, Reynolds' Cole Matthews at 126, and Brookville's Tate Ortz at 132.
— Chestnut Ridge has gone 3-2 in each of its previous two appearances, losing to Brookville and Reynolds on both occasions.
— Reynolds, who with host Brookville has attended all 19 previous editions of the Ultimate Duals, sports a strong 62-12 all-time record at the event.

The Outlook
Frankly, there isn't enough time to mention all the individual talent that will be here, which makes things more interesting given that it is a dual meet format and matchups will dictate outcomes. Brookville has won this tournament twice in a row, beating Reynolds in the standalone nightcap dual each time. Chestnut Ridge has as much talent as anybody in the building on Saturday in my opinion, and the key for the Lions will be to limit bonus points as much as possible where they will be heavy underdogs (Example: against Matthews, Cole Rickert (220) and Gene Ringer (285) of Reynolds).

Chestnut Ridge coach Greg Lazor on Reynolds
"Reynolds had a great Powerade Tournament, and is always solid from top to bottom. There will be some marquee matches I am looking forward to. They have (Gage) Bayless, Matthews, and (Seth) Hogue, as well as two nice anchors up top in Rickert and Ringer."

Lazor on Brookville
"Brookville might be the most solid team there this weekend. It's hard to find a weak spot from top to bottom. There should be many great bouts with (Gavin) Park, Ortz, (Cole) Aaron, (Caleb) Hetrick, and (Noah) Cieleski."

Lazor on the Others
"All the teams are tough. If they weren't, they wouldn't be in this tournament. Of the other three, Greenville would be the darkhorse. (Blake) Reynolds and (Gage) Gladysz up top are two of the state's best, and there are a lot of quality kids below them. The whole weekend will be a grind, but it will be fun."

Review and Preview - Jan. 11

This past weekend's Bloody Run Duals at Everett featured a District 6-AA final between West Branch and Central Cambria. West Branch cleared a big hurdle by beating Bedford, 45-30, to win its pool and advance to the title match, where the Warriors dispatched the Red Devils, 52-21.
Aside from the West Branch loss, Bedford won its four other duals, while host Everett suffered a pair of two-point defeats to Forest Hills and Meyersdale after losing to Central Cambria earlier in the day. Tussey Mountain had wins over James Buchanan and United in the tournament.
This week features a key dual tomorrow night in the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference, plus the upcoming Ultimate Duals on Saturday. I'll have more on that power-packed event later in the week. Here's the local schedule:

Schedule
Tuesday
Westmont-Hilltop at Bedford
Claysburg-Kimmel at Northern Bedford
HOPE for Hyndman at Shade
Tussey Mountain at Moshannon Valley

Thursday
Central Cambria at Bedford
Juniata Valley at Claysburg-Kimmel
Shade, Tussey Mountain at Everett
Berlin at HOPE for Hyndman
Northern Bedford at North Star

Friday
Glendale at Northern Bedford

Saturday
Chestnut Ridge in Ultimate Duals at Brookville

Tomorrow night's match with Westmont visiting Bedford has major implications on the remainder of things in the LHAC. Bedford is unbeaten in the league at 5-0 and can clinch at least a tie for the conference title with a win. Westmont is 4-1, while Cambria Heights, Penn Cambria, and Somerset all have two league defeats. The Bisons have just two LHAC matches after this remaining, Central Cambria on Thursday and Cambria Heights next week.
Thursday's tri-meet at Everett will begin at 5 p.m. Varsity matches will go in this order — Everett vs. Shade, Tussey Mountain vs. Shade, and Everett vs. Tussey Mountain. A second mat for junior high duals between the three schools will be used.

Around the State
District 6-AA powers Huntingdon and Mount Union each lost on Saturday. At the Juniata Duals, Saucon Valley beat Huntingdon, 36-33. Last week's latest state team rankings from PA Power Wrestling had Saucon fourth and Huntingdon 14th, while Mark Dugan of Off the Mat has them eighth and ninth in his latest edition that was released this afternoon.
Mount Union was handed its first defeat by tournament host Line Mountain, 42-35, at the Line Mountain Duals. Line Mountain was unranked by both services at the time of the win, and Dugan now has them 17th with Mount Union one spot behind.
Mount Union will host West Branch tomorrow night and then host Huntingdon on Thursday.

Review and Preview - Jan. 4

There's plenty to review in local wrestling after the holiday tournaments and a few dual meets sprinkled in are now in the books.
Between a lot of travel and my son's birthday, I wasn't able to attend much or put anything on here in the past two weeks. I did see a pair of dual meets that involved two of the better teams in District 6-AA — Central's 43-24 win at Northern Bedford, and Mount Union's 51-18 victory over Everett.
Though Huntingdon is probably still the favorite to win D6, Central and Mount Union are surely worth keeping an eye on. The Scarlet Dragons are getting stronger with Braeden Swab's return (didn't wrestle at Northern, but took a forfeit at 126 against Bellwood last week), and the fact that a few football players are rounding more into wrestling form.
Mount Union looked sharp at Everett. Other than Jake Boozel, the Trojans may not have as many standout individuals as some other teams, but it's a solid lineup from top to bottom. The best bout of the night was Josh Boozel's 4-3 win over Garret Cornell at 106 pounds. Boozel, a sophomore and returning regional qualifier, is ranked 11th in the state by PA Power Wrestling.
Tournaments of course took the major news during the school break. Chestnut Ridge's Aaron Burkett wasn't that far away from becoming the Lions' first Powerade winner in the team's third trip to the prestigious event, only to fall just short in a 4-3 loss to Penn Trafford's Job Chishko. Burkett held a 3-0 lead in the second period. Teammate Conner Buttry finished sixth after dropping a decision to Montoursville sophomore Gavin Hoffman for fifth place. Buttry and Hoffman could very well see each other again in either or both of the state tournaments in Hershey.
Bedford's Jonathan Gabriel placed second in the Manheim Tournament after Palisades' Jacob Wasser won the 132-pound final, 3-2. Wasser was a state placewinner three seasons ago as a freshman. The Bisons also had sixth-place efforts from Vinny Fernandez and Brandon Greise at 220 and 285, respectively.
Northern Bedford tallied six placewinners at the Southmoreland Holiday Classic, the highest being Zach Clark taking fourth at 120.
