SW Regional: Saturday Morning Eyecatchers

Here are some things to look for this morning at the Southwest Regional.

 Three Semifinal Weights to Watch
120 – Huntingdon’s Collin Glorioso vs. Burgettstown’s Austin McDermitt; Jefferson-Morgan’s Brendan Howard vs. Westmont’s Carnell Andrews
Should be two good ones here. Glorioso-McDermitt is a semi I’ve been looking forward to since the brackets were released. The Huntingdon junior was part of a strong first day for the Bearcats. The other side pits WPIAL champ Howard against freshman Andrews, who was solid with four takedowns of Chestnut Ridge’s Justin McCoy in the quarterfinals.

160 – South Fayette’s Jared Walker vs. Westmont’s Anthony Walters; Berlin’s Bryce Fochtman vs. Blairsville’s Drew Doak
A senior vs. a freshman on the top of the draw here with defending state runner-up Walker taking on another of Westmont’s heralded freshmen group. Walker finds ways to win, which is the bottom line here, but he often looks less than impressive doing so. Walters made an escape stand up to get past Chestnut Ridge’s Colby Hillegass in the quarters. Doak is still unbeaten and might have looked as good as anybody that wrestled two bouts on Friday, with a first period pin and a 17-6 major decision to his credit. Fochtman is one of five Berlin semifinalists, though all of them may be considered underdogs in the morning round.

170 – Cambria Heights’ Levi Niebauer vs. Beth-Center’s Anthony Welsh; South Park’s Greg Bulsak vs. Berlin’s Taylor Cahill
One of the tougher weights statewide has four good semifinalists in this Southwest Regional. Niebauer, a state medalist a year ago, rang up a pin in his only action yesterday, while Welsh powered past Penn Cambria’s Jacob Driskel and Bedford’s Daniel Brett. On the bottom, it’s two district champions in Bulsak and Cahill. Cahill had a pair of pins on Friday to secure his state tournament slot.

There should be other good semifinals, including at 152 with Chestnut Ridge’s Trent Crouse taking on Huntingdon’s Jacob Oliver in a highly-anticipated showdown. Given some pressure is off now that Crouse has finally earned a trip to the state tournament, I’m interested to see how his style matches up with Oliver.

Locals’ Road to Hershey
Four of my coverage area wrestlers – Chestnut Ridge’s Aaron Burkett (106), Crouse (152), and Conner Buttry (195), along with Bedford’s Jonathan Gabriel (126) – have already punched their tickets to Hershey. Here’s a look at what lies ahead for the rest of the Bedford County contingent in the second round of consolations. These wrestlers need two wins to get inside the top six which would mean a date in Hershey next week:

113 – Everett’s Liam Flaherty: faces Huntingdon’s Izac Benson, who pulled off an early stunner by pinning McGuffey’s Gage Nicolella, the D7 champ.
113 – Northern Bedford’s Zach Clark: in the same part of the consolation bracket as Flaherty. Clark gave Penn Cambria’s Nolan Link a battle in a quarterfinal loss, 9-4, and meets Mount Pleasant’s Alex Miscovich this morning.
113 – Chestnut Ridge’s Dylan Williams: Williams suffered a heartbreaking loss to West Branch’s Joey Couteret last night. The Lions’ sophomore led 4-1 late before Couteret rallied to force sudden victory overtime and scored the winning takedown. Williams will have to regroup against Burrell’s Trent Bechtold, and then could possibly see Nicolella with a state berth on the line.
120 – Chestnut Ridge’s Justin McCoy: After falling to Andrews, McCoy drops into the loser’s bracket and will face Marion Center’s David Wiles, who eliminated Northern Bedford’s Trey Childers. If McCoy wins, he’ll get either Central’s Braeden Swab or Somerset’s Quinn Cole. McCoy pinned Cole in last week’s district semifinals.
126 – Chestnut Ridge’s Luke Hobson: After losing in the opening round yesterday, Hobson bounced back with a wrestleback victory and now draws WPIAL champ Hunter Neely of Bentworth, who lost in the quarters.
126 – Northern Bedford’s Jared Helsley: Helsley also lost in Round One, and came back to pin Richland’s Stephen Rouser last night to remain in the tournament. Like Hobson, Helsley gets a WPIAL wrestler in South Allegheny’s Justo Hernandez.
132 – Chestnut Ridge’s Morgan Deremer: Deremer also went into the consolations early and stayed alive to today with a win over Burrell’s Jason Roberts. Deremer’s gift for that is a bout with South Fayette’s Shane Ging, who ended Crouse’s season a couple of years ago in Johnstown. Should Deremer win, he might see Berlin’s Joe Swank in a go to states or go home third round consolation. Swank has two wins over Deremer this season, but it was just 6-5 last weekend.
132 – Everett’s Ben Stover: Stover received a bye in the consolation’s first round and now gets Richland’s Adam George, who was upset in his quarterfinal bout.
138 – Chestnut Ridge’s Derrick Claar: Claar lost a tight 2-1 quarter to Southmoreland’s Evan Myers. Still looking for an elusive trip to the individual state tournament in his last chance, Claar starts his wrestleback journey against Chartiers-Houston’s Ben Hritsko.
138 – Northern Bedford’s Carter Replogle: A first round winner, Replogle dropped into the consolations and will draw Huntingdon’s Tyler Scott. Replogle is on the opposite side of the consy bracket from Claar.
160 – Chestnut Ridge’s Colby Hillegass: Hillegass battled Westmont’s Walters before losing, 1-0. That puts him in the consolations against West Branch’s Clayton Green, then maybe the winner between Huntingdon’s Jon Wagner and North Star’s Dillion Charlton, whom Hillegass beat in the D5 Tournament last weekend.
170 – Bedford’s Daniel Brett: Brett will face Bellwood’s Zach Mock in the second round of consolations early. After that if he wins, it’s either Blairsville’s Nick Pecze or Southmoreland’s Brennen Coles.
170 – Everett’s Wes Graham: In an interesting twist, all three of Everett’s competitors wrestled only one bout on Friday, thanks to each of them receiving first round consolation byes. Graham will try to keep his season going against Burgettstown’s Jake McKee.
182 – Chestnut Ridge’s Brandyn Beaver: Beaver faces Juniata’s Taylor Foster, who came into the tournament with only one loss but fell in the quarterfinals.
285 – Chestnut Ridge’s Shane Davis: Davis was pinned in a quarter by Jefferson-Morgan’s Ian Wolfe. The path for the Lion senior starts with Washington’s Keirs Gloady. The winner there gets either United’s Andrew Deitman or McGuffey’s Ryan Steinstraw.

Southwest Regional Bracket Analysis

It's Class AA Southwest Regional week for the best wrestlers in Districts 5, 6 and 7. As you should know by now, the tournament will be held at Canon-McMillan High School this year. Wrestling begins at 5 p.m. on Friday with the preliminary round followed by the quarterfinals.
The top six placewinners at each weight qualify for the state tournament in Hershey next week. The extra qualifier means that all quarterfinal winners on Friday night are guaranteed top six finishes and thus punch their tickets to the big dance.
Brackets can be found at these two links - Escape Sports and pa-wrestling.comBleacher Coaches is also expected to host a live chat about the tournament tomorrow night at 8:30 p.m.
Later in the week, I'll have a preview and predictions for Friday's Bedford Gazette.
As time permits, which it should, I expect to jump in on the chat. For now, here's some bracket analysis:

106 Pounds
Jefferson-Morgan's Gavin Teasdale drew the bye here and is 39-0. At the very bottom of the draw is Chestnut Ridge's Aaron Burkett, 35-4. Certainly, a rematch of the Thomas Subaru final between these two would be highly anticipated. Burkett took Teasdale down early in the first period and pushed him to overtime before losing, 7-5. The other local is Tussey Mountain's Oaklee Brode, who gets Derry's Shawn Broadway in the opening round. That bout is in Teasdale's half of the bracket. Burkett will wrestle Mount Union's Josh Boozel in the first round.

113 Pounds
District 6 champ Max Murin of Central Cambria took the bye. I would expect the title battle here to be between Murin, Penn Cambria's Nolan Link, and McGuffey's Gage Nicolella. Link beat Murin for the Thomas championship before Murin avenged it in the D6 final two weekends ago. In the latest Off the Mat rankings, Murin is third, Link is seventh, and Nicolella ninth. Link-Nicolella could be a good semifinal. Bedford County has three representatives with D5 champ Zach Clark, runner-up Dylan Williams, and third-place Liam Flaherty. Though Northern Bedford's Clark is a district winner, on paper Williams might have a better shot at the semifinals this week. Clark would likely get Link in a quarterfinal, while Chestnut Ridge's Williams would see either Mount Pleasant's Alex Miscovich or West Branch's Joey Couteret. Williams didn't wrestle Miscovich or Couteret at the Thomas Subaru Tournament, but they're a notch or two below Link in my opinion. Flaherty has Ellwood City's Tyler Alberts first and would see Murin next if he wins the opener.

120 Pounds
This is a very strong weight at the top that features five of the top 12 wrestlers in the state rankings by Off the Mat. It starts with Huntingdon's Collin Glorioso, who is 36-2 and has the first round bye. Also up in his half is Burgettstown's Austin McDermitt, who was the WPIAL runner-up to Jefferson-Morgan's Brendan Howard. Howard, in the bottom of the draw, is ranked sixth and McDermitt is 10th. Glorioso-McDermitt is a likely semifinal with the other being Howard against the quarterfinal winner of Chestnut Ridge's Justin McCoy vs. Westmont's Carnell Andrews, a battle of highly touted freshmen who haven't disappointed in their varsity debut seasons. Howard beat McCoy in the Thomas Subaru Tournament semifinals. Andrews is ranked 11th and McCoy 12th by OTM.

126 Pounds
Bedford's Jonathan Gabriel goes after his first regional title from the bye position at 126. He'll get the winner of Central Cambria's Ian Ostrowski and Burrell's Dillan Jeffery for his quarterfinal bout. Also in the top half of the bracket are South Allegheny's Justo Hernandez and Penns Valley's Curtis Decker. Gabriel is ranked second in the state by Off the Mat and first by PA Power. Heading the Off the Mat rankings is Forest Hills' Tristan Law, who is on the bottom half. Also there is Bentworth's Hunter Neely, the D7 champ who is ranked 10th.

132 Pounds
Derry's George Phillippi, a former state champion, has the bye and is at the top of this bracket. He's ranked second by Off the Mat, while other players here could include sixth-ranked Joe Swank of Berlin, ninth-ranked Adam George of Richland, 12th-ranked Shane Ging of South Fayette, 13th-ranked Jake Boozel of Mount Union, and 14th-ranked Kody Komara of Freedom. I'm also interested to see how Chestnut Ridge's Morgan Deremer does. The Lion sophomore gave Swank all he wanted in a 6-5 bout in the District 5 final, and he beat Boozel twice in the Thomas Subaru Tournament. He draws Avonworth's Darion Trimmer first, with George potentially awaiting in the quarterfinals. Everett's Ben Stover has Ging in an opening round matchup.

138 Pounds
South Fayette's Mike Carr is unbeaten and in my view the favorite here. The bottom half is pretty loaded, with Chestnut Ridge's Derrick Claar, Southmoreland's Evan Myers, and Central Cambria's Tommy Opdenhoff among potential finalists. Claar, ranked 10th, and Myers, ranked 11th, could see each other in the quarterfinals. Northern Bedford's Carter Replogle is in the top half of the bracket and wrestles McGuffey's Luke Desmond to begin Friday's action in the weight class.

145 Pounds
Interesting bracketing here which was alluded to by Eric Knopsnyder earlier in the week - Knop's Knotes. Jeannette's Gio Vonne Sanders got the bye, but lost twice to Ligonier Valley's Robby Patrick who is the de-facto third seed. Somerset's Austin Hemminger won the District 5 Tournament and was a well-deserved recipient of the event's Outstanding Wrestler Award. The bottom half of the draw is intriguing, with Patrick possibly seeing Mount Pleasant's Austin Mears, a wrestler he lost to earlier in the season, in the quarterfinals. Also there are Hemminger, North Star's Tevin Mostoller, Forest Hills' Travis Templeton, and Avella's Nick Kusich.

152 Pounds
This weight has three of the top six in Off the Mat's rankings — South Park's Jake Wentzel, Huntingdon's Jacob Oliver, and Chestnut Ridge's Trent Crouse — who have five losses between them and were all district champions. Wentzel is on top of the bracket and drew the bye with Oliver and Crouse in the bottom half. Crouse could see Mount Pleasant's Ethan Charlesworth, ranked 13th, in the quarterfinals. This tournament has always been a problem for Crouse, but I would be stunned not to see him in the top six this weekend.

160 Pounds
Oddly enough, Off the Mat has numbers 2, 3, and 6 ranked here just like at 152. That begins with South Fayette's J.J. Walker, a returning state finalist. Walker is ranked second in the state and has the bye at Canon-Mac this weekend. Blairsville's Drew Doak is unbeaten and at the bottom of the bracket. He is ranked third, while Berlin's Bryce Fochtman is sixth and on Doak's side. This is a great weight that also includes Westmont's Anthony Walters, ranked eighth, Beth-Center's Jason Stay, ranked 10th, Huntingdon's Jon Wagner, ranked 12th, and Chestnut Ridge's Colby Hillegass, ranked 15th. Hillegass sees Indiana's Bobby Bell first and could get Walters in the quarterfinals.

170 Pounds
Four of the top 10 in OTM's rankings reside here at 170. South Park's Greg Bulsak, Cambria Heights' Levi Niebauer, Beth-Center's Anthony Welsh, and Berlin's Taylor Cahill are the top contenders to head to Hershey as a regional champion. Niebauer got the bye, with Bulsak and Cahill on a collision course for the semifinals. Welsh is in the top with Niebauer. Looking for a darkhorse? Try West Branch's Luke Slippey, who is ranked 13th and will likely see Bulsak on Friday night. Bedford's Daniel Brett, who drew Kittanning's Marco Duncan, and Everett's Wes Graham, who drew Southmoreland's Brennan Coles, are both in the top half of the bracket.

182 Pounds
Penns Valley's Corey Hazel is ranked second in the state and has the bye at this weight. I would have him as the favorite, but beyond that, it could be pretty wide open. Jefferson-Morgan's Bill Bowlen, Beth-Center's Nico Brown, Juniata's Taylor Foster, South Fayette's Brett Beltz, and Southern Huntingdon's Scott Carbaugh are all ranked in the 8-15 range. Chestnut Ridge's Brandyn Beaver has a tough first round assignment with the ninth-ranked Brown. I wouldn't rule out Berlin's Storm McDonald or Meyersdale's Christian Hutzell from finding a place in the top six.

195 Pounds
Blairsville's Scott Thompson and Chestnut Ridge's Conner Buttry are favorites here on their sides of the 195-pound bracket. The other district champion here is Burrell's Robert Scherer, who is in Buttry's half but hasn't had a whole lot of success with Buttry in the past. Thompson is ranked second by Off the Mat with Buttry fourth. Scherer is 11th and Berlin's Toby Cahill, in Thompson's part of the draw, is 12th.

220 Pounds
This is a loaded bracket with the top two ranked wrestlers, West Branch's Buzzy Maines, and Kittanning's Jake Robb. That is the likely final and perhaps a state final preview, but there are others who will vie for state berths. They include (from top to bottom in the bracket) South Allegheny's Seth Hitchens, Yough's Tom Sever, Meyersdale's Ty Smith, Westmont's Josiah Jones, and United's Tyler Oliver. In the Off the Mat Rankings, Jones is seventh, Oliver is eighth, Sever is ninth, and Hitchens is 11th.

285 Pounds
Burrell's Allan Beattie drew the bye and is the favorite at heavyweight. He is ranked first, with Southmoreland's Jake Beistel second by OTM. Jefferson-Morgan's Ian Wolfe, United's Andrew Deitman, and Southern Huntingdon's Nick Winfield are ranked in the lower half of Off the Mat. Chestnut Ridge's Shane Davis and Berlin's Anthony Collins, first and second in District 5, could be sleeper picks. Davis gets Blairsville's Jake Smith first and could see Wolfe in the quarterfinals.

District 5 Bracket Analysis

As you probably know by now, the District 5 brackets were released yesterday. The tournament begins on Friday at 2 p.m. with pigtails and the quarterfinals to follow. I will have a preview story and predictions for who will be the regional qualifiers from myself and Sam Shuss in Friday's Bedford Gazette. Full brackets can be found here — D5 Brackets.
   Below is some bracket analysis:

106
Chestnut Ridge's Aaron Burkett, ranked second in the state and a returning champ and sixth place medalist in Hershey, is the heavy favorite here. Hard not to see the top four seeds getting to the semifinals.

113
No pigtails scheduled as of now in this bracket with Chestnut Ridge's Dylan Williams seeded first. The bottom side quarterfinals could be interesting here. Northern Bedford's Zach Clark is the second seed, but he lost to seventh seed Grant Browell of Bedford in a dual meet, 4-3.

120
Another weight, another top seed for Chestnut Ridge, as freshman Justin McCoy walks in as a likely bet to win his first district title. Only McCoy (28-4) and Somerset's Quinn Cole (20-8) have more than 20 wins here.

126
Bedford's Jonathan Gabriel is one of two Bedford County wrestlers that can win their third district titles this weekend. Northern Bedford's Jared Helsley is the second seed and came down recently from 132. That means we won't see another round of Helsley vs. Chestnut Ridge's Morgan Deremer, who is at 132. But we will see Round Three between North Star's Brady Gardner and Berlin's Austin Lee, in the 4-5 matchup. Gardner has two pins of Lee already this season, but the latter one came in the district duals when Lee built an early lead only to be caught in a cradle. Gardner's big win there helped the Cougars reach the D5 final.

132
Berlin's Joey Swank has the top seed here with Deremer second. I think those two should get to the finals, but the battle for third is wide open in my opinion. Everett's Ben Stover (3 seed), Northern Bedford's Jon Raab (4 seed), North Star's Chris Baker (5 seed), and HOPE for Hyndman's Tanner Clites (6 seed) could all be players. Bedford's Kyle Mehle was a district finalist last year. He is seeded eighth this year.

138
Chestnut Ridge's Derrick Claar looks for his third title and is at the same weight as last season. The top seed should get to the finals. Quarterfinals between Everett's Mahlon Akers and North Star's Shawn Costas, and Berlin's Kane McKenzie and Bedford's Kenny Collins, could be interesting.

145
This could be one of the best weights in Windber this weekend. Top seed Brady McKenzie of Meyersdale and No. 2 Tevin Mostoller of North Star have split a pair of bouts. Somerset's Austin Hemminger, a state qualifier last year, is the third seed after wrestling mostly at 152 this season. Shade's Mike Manges is the fourth seed but does have a win over McKenzie. Northern Bedford's Ridge Hershberger, Chestnut Ridge's Levi Hobson, and Conemaugh Township's Brandon Stahl also have winning records.

152
The top three seeds here — Chestnut Ridge's Trent Crouse, Somerset's Jon Fabian, and North Star's Gus Strasiser — have a combined record of 80-18, while the other six wrestlers in the bracket are 33-63. Fabian-Strasiser in the semifinals could be pretty good.

160
This weight is a lot like the previous one, with Berlin's Bryce Fochtman, Chestnut Ridge's Colby Hillegass, and North Star's Dillion Charlton owning 81 wins combined. Hillegass vs. Charlton is a highlight projected semifinal.

170
Berlin's Taylor Cahill and Northern Bedford's Lucas Kolinchak are likely finalists here, with a battle for third possibly between Bedford's Dan Brett, Everett's Wes Graham, and North Star's Michael Baker. Brett beat Graham at the Thomas Tournament, after the Everett wrestler had nearly pulled off the stunner of the year in a 2-0 loss to returning state finalist J.J. Walker of South Fayette.

182
Meyersdale's second of three top seeds in the tournament is Chris Hutzell at 182. Berlin's Storm McDonald and North Star's Jon Thomas are second and third, respectively. McDonald beat Thomas 5-3 in the regular season dual. Keep an eye on Chestnut Ridge's Brandyn Beaver, seeded fourth.

195
Hard not to see a final between Chestnut Ridge's Conner Buttry and Berlin's Toby Cahill. North Star's Hunter Conner is the only other wrestler in the draw with more than a .500 record.

220
Meyersdale's Ty Smith holds down the top seed here, with Berlin's Shane Pepper second. Smith pinned Pepper early in the season, and also has a win over Somerset's Logan Eller, the third seed.

285
To me, this is the one weight where there isn't a clear cut one or two choices for eventual champion. Save the best for last? Quite possibly, as Chestnut Ridge's Shane Davis, Berlin's Anthony Collins, HOPE for Hyndman's Brandon Greise, Bedford's Nate Shoemaker, Shade's Trevor Brown, and Everett's Kyle Peterson are the top six seeds in that order and are all capable of getting to Canon-Mac next week. Brown beat Collins earlier in the year, while first-year wrestler Peterson has a win over Davis. Greise might be one of the least known kids in the tournament, but he might be Hyndman's best wrestler and probably its best shot at a regional qualifier.

Review and Preview - February 9

Now that mid-February is approaching, the individual part of the wrestling season is nearly upon us. That begins this weekend with the District 6-AA Tournament in Altoona.
That highlights the upcoming set of days for local action. In short, let's review the past week.
Obviously, that starts with Chestnut Ridge's performance in Hershey at the Class AA Team Duals, where the Lions became the first finalist in the smaller-school level from the District 5 and 6 area.
I did a couple of blog entries over the weekend, as you can view below, and of course covered the journey to second place extensively for the Bedford Gazette. Also, look for tomorrow's paper as I discuss how the wrestling foundation built by Hall of Famer Jim Clark at Chestnut Ridge is being taken to another level under Greg Lazor. That's on the weekly wrestling page in my "Cheap Tilts" piece.
In other news, Bedford had a solid win over Somerset on Saturday night. Bisons' coach Brian Creps seemed enthused by the result as his team starts preparing for the individual season.
Here's what's going on locally this week:

Tuesday's Matches
Tussey Mountain at Chestnut Ridge (6 p.m. start)
   Philipsburg at Northern Bedford
   HOPE for Hyndman at Berlin

Wednesday's Match
   Bedford at Greater Latrobe

Friday/Saturday
   District 6-AA Tournament at Altoona

State Semi Thoughts, and a Finals Look

Chestnut Ridge fans, including Larry Weyant and Lonnie Buttry, cheer
after a Lions' pin in the state semifinals against Wyalusing Valley last night.

  Was there ever a doubt?
That's what it looked like Chestnut Ridge's Derrick Claar was suggesting after he pointed to Lions' head coach Greg Lazor following his rousing final-seconds comeback at 145 pounds last night.
Claar's late move to put Wyalusing Valley's Denton Porter on his back for a four-point play and an 8-5 win was the beginning of what ultimately became the end, a 45-21 domination of the previously unbeaten Rams.
That end: Just that Chestnut Ridge is the first team wrestling finalist from Chestnut Ridge in Class AA history, the first team wrestling finalist from Bedford County in Class AA history, and the first team wrestling finalist from District 5 or District 6 in Class AA history.
What a night for the Lions.
Moments like these are ones that will be etched in stone forever. For the wrestlers, for the coaches, for the parents, and for the fans.
It's an absolute privelage to be able to get paid to be up close and personal watching high school athletes compete at the highest level. It's my job but it's often hard to consider it a job.
In my eight-plus years at the Bedford Gazette, I've been able to see so many great accomplishments, not only in wrestling. No matter what happens this afternoon, thank you to Chestnut Ridge for giving me one more fantastic story to capture last night.
In print and online
I encourage you to get a copy of today's Bedford Gazette, which of course has my story and four photos from Friday's action. Also, Aaron Burkett won his 100th career bout last night and I will have something on him for Monday's paper.
Finals Preview
Chestnut Ridge goes after more history against Boiling Springs in today's championship match.
The Bubblers are very strong and balanced, a lot like the Lions, and have come through the tough top part of the bracket with a nailbiter over Brookville and a solid win over Reynolds.
Can the Lions pull it off? Yes, but here are my key points:
   - Ridge needs to win the toss. According to the Lions, they haven't won many of them this year. They did last night, and maybe that trend continues to turn in their favor.
   - The 145-pound bout, likely between Claar and A.J. Kostyak, is a big toss-up. I feel that is one that Chestnut Ridge needs.
   - With Boiling Springs being so good from 126-170, if the Lions could get 145, wherever Trent Crouse goes (152 or 160), and one other one along with saving as much as they can against the hammer trio of Grant Bond, Korbin Myers, and Kyle Shoop, things could work out for the title.
It's hard to make a point prediction here. Honestly, I think Boiling Springs is a little bit better and will probably win. That doesn't mean my heart won't be pulling a little for the Lions.

Thursday's Quick Notes from State Duals

Chestnut Ridge's Aaron Burkett scores a nearfall on Northern Lebanon's
Dustin Breidegan during the 106-pound bout. Burkett opened the match with
a pin and that was followed by three more falls from Dylan Williams, Justin McCoy,
and Luke Hobson. The Lions won the dual, 45-23, to advance to the state quarterfinals.

Notes from Thursday
   - Chestnut Ridge had a 14-10 advantage on Northern Lebanon in nearfall points. Takedowns were 10-10.

   - Northern Lehigh had nine, yes nine first period pins in a 72-8 romp over Archbishop Carroll.

   - Wyalusing won the final bout at heavyweight to defeat Saegertown, 28-26. Wyalusing also won a key bout at 145 as Collin Edsell beat Nick Monico, 5-1. Wyalusing is a likely semifinal opponent for Chestnut Ridge provided the Lions take care of Burrell.

   - Saegertown fell into the consolations, and after a probable morning win on Friday, the Panthers will draw the loser of the Boiling Springs/Brookville quarterfinal. Saegertown handed Brookville a loss at the Ultimate Duals.

Chestnut Ridge-Northern Lebanon Preview

Chestnut Ridge vs. Northern Lebanon
Thursday, 4 p.m. at Giant Center, Hershey

Probable Lineups (Chestnut Ridge wrestlers listed first)

106 - Aaron Burkett (27-4) or Dylan Williams (20-4) vs. Dustin Breidegan (17-5)
113 - Burkett or Williams vs. Chris Zechman (15-7)
120 - Justin McCoy (23-4) or Luke Hobson (15-11) vs. Zach Kelly (16-8)
126 - McCoy or Hobson vs. Kelly or Shawn Campbell (12-12)
132 - Morgan Deremer (21-10) vs. Caeleb Blatt (25-6)
138 - Derrick Claar (22-5) or Levi Hobson (15-12) vs. Quinn Blatt (17-5)
145 - Claar or Hobson vs. Blaise Bressler (8-7)
152 - Trent Crouse (26-3) vs. Joey Embosky (11-4)
160 - Colby Hillegass (22-6) or Josh McGill (5-8) vs. Luke Funck (23-7)
170 - Hillegass or McGill vs. Craig Spitler (19-6)
182 - Brandyn Beaver (13-8) vs. Evan Daub (22-6)
195 - Conner Buttry (28-3) vs. Hunter Wallace (14-8)
220 - Jon Heming (9-12) vs. Matt Vines (22-5)
285 - Shane Davis (8-6) vs. George Thompson (13-11)

Analysis: The District 5 champions open their third straight trip to the Class AA State Duals with District 3 runner-up Northern Lebanon. The Vikings have some solid upperweights, led by Daub and Vines. I would give Chestnut Ridge the lower three (with McCoy at 120), 138, 152, and 195. Toss-ups would be at 126 (with Hobson), 132, 145, and whoever Hillegass matches up with at 160 or 170. Outside of Daub and Vines, I don't see a clear cut favorite for Northern Lebanon. That said, this is the state duals, and the Vikings' 42-24 win over Huntingdon in Tuesday's play-in seemed impressive. Still though, hard to not like the Lions here.

   Prediction: Chestnut Ridge, 34-19.

   Other First Round picks
   Boiling Springs over Fort LeBoeuf
   Brookville over Montoursville
   West Branch over Lower Moreland
   Reynolds over Saucon Valley
   Burrell over EL Meyers
   Northern Lehigh over Archbishop Carroll
   Saegertown over Wyalusing Valley
