— With the impending winter storm approaching, two wrestling events for Saturday have been wiped out. The ICC North/South Duals at Tussey Mountain will now be held on Friday, January 3. A revised schedule has not be released, but I am told that weigh-ins will be held at 4 p.m.
The Jarvis Memorial Tournament at Athens HS, featuring Chestnut Ridge, has been cancelled. The Lions will now have points available for use. Coach Greg Lazor was hoping to find an alternative, even using myself as a resource this afternoon, but as of this blog posting, nothing has been found as the snow will likely scrap the day locally except for the already ongoing tournaments at Central Mountain and Penn Cambria.
Chestnut Ridge's next scheduled match is a home date with North Star on Thursday.
— I didn't get to this earlier in the week, but a big upset in District 3 occurred as Shippensburg beat Boiling Springs, 36-26. Shippensburg is Class AAA, but there were only three returning wrestlers to that team this year that had a winning record last season. On the other side, Boiling Springs has a core group of studs back from last year that includes state medalists Korbin Myers and Kyle Shoop. I did see the Bubblers were ranked as high as second in Class AA in preseason state rankings. The X-factor for Boiling Springs might be the state of their coaching staff, after head coach Rod Wright was charged with drug possession in April. I'm not privy to all the details and not sure what his status is of now, though I believe he is not on the bench early in the season.
