Penn State opens wrestling season

Two-time defending national champion Penn State held its annual public wrestleoffs on Thursday night. I have provided a link to a writeup and video interviews from a few of the wrestlers. Nico Megaludis, Dylan Alton, David Taylor, and Quentin Wright are in this weekend's NWCA All-Star Classic and did not compete last night.

In related collegiate wrestling news, Ohio State also held concluded its wrestleoffs. North Star's Nick Roberts, who will redshirt this season, did not take part in Thursday's bouts. One result of interest was Ian Paddock's 7-2 decision over Hunter Stieber, a returning All-American who is ranked No. 3 at 141 pounds by Amateur Wrestling News.

I bring this up to locals because Paddock might be a name Bedford County fans remember. A four-time New York high school champion, Paddock defeated Hyndman's Logan Sheldon in the finals of the Sheetz Holiday Classic at Penn Cambria. Sheldon was a three-time PIAA qualifier and finished second in the state at 130 pounds in 2009.
