Weekly Review and Preview - January 19

We're coming off a strong weekend that leads into another one as the Thomas Tournament is center stage in the area. Action begins on Friday. I'll have much more later in the week and I encourage everyone to get a copy of Friday's Bedford Gazette, where our annual pullout section on the Bedford event will appear. For now, here's several items of interest plus a look at what's going on in wrestling this week.

Ultimate Duals Recap
I didn't go to Brookville on Saturday, but was obviously keeping a close eye to my phone and computer to see what was happening with Chestnut Ridge's appearance at the Ultimate Duals. The Lions had big wins over Burrell and Brockway, and an eight-point victory against Saegertown, while losing by a combined five points to Reynolds and Brookville.
Reynolds jumped out to a 30-10 lead to clinch the win over Ridge, before the Lions closed it with 16 points in the final three bouts. The Raiders had a key win with Gage Bayless beating Aaron Burkett, 5-4, at 113 pounds. Last year at 106, Burkett beat Bayless 5-0.
Chestnut Ridge's Shane Davis didn't wrestle against Saegertown, and state placewinner Nick Monico didn't for the Panthers against the Lions.
Host Brookville won the tournament by beating Reynolds in the nightcap as both went 4-1. Brookville lost to Saegertown, who lost to Chestnut Ridge and Reynolds.
All four of those teams should be medal contenders in the Class AA State Duals. More on that below.

Claysburg Duals Recap
I was at Claysburg for much of Saturday and saw the Bulldogs wrestle well on their way to third place. That included a pair of wins over Forest Hills, whom I thought would be in the finals against Central. But Claysburg spoiled that with a 34-30 win in pool action, only to lose to Marion Center later which negated a possible title matchup with Central and former coach Dave Marko.

Upcoming Events
With the Thomas Tournament this weekend, that is a signal that the postseason is nearing. The state team championships come up around the corner as District Duals take place next week. Class AA is shaping up to be very solid in Hershey.
If we look at the Ultimate Duals, the four teams I mentioned above as contenders — Brookville, Chestnut Ridge, Reynolds, and Saegertown — are likely to be in the mix, along with District 3 powers Boiling Springs and Bermudian Springs. Boiling Springs beat Bermudian Springs, 33-23, on Saturday night, without state placewinner Grant Bond in the lineup as he is still battling a foot injury.
Off the Mat released its latest rankings today. Here is the top ten:

1. Boiling Springs
2. Reynolds
3. Brookville
4. Chestnut Ridge
5. Bermudian Springs
6. Saegertown
7. Wyalusing
8. Montoursville
9. North Schuylkill
10. Tri-Valley

A quick glance at the bracket for the Class AA State Duals shows this: If district team tournaments play out the way I would think (take that for what it's worth), the top half of the bracket in Hershey would include Boiling Springs, Brookville, and Reynolds. Boiling Springs and Brookville would meet in the quarterfinals, with Reynolds likely awaiting in the semifinals.
Down below, Chestnut Ridge and Bermudian Springs could face off in a first round dual. I would also project Saegertown in that part of the draw as D10 runner-up, along with Wyalusing and the D11 champ (North Schuylkill, Tri-Valley or #18 Saucon Valley) and D7 champ (#11 South Fayette or #19 Jefferson-Morgan).
